"The Writings of Abraham Lincoln, Volume 2 (1843-1858)", The writings of the author are very interesting, enjoyable,and educational. This book gives the reader a chance to enter into Lincoln's world. The reader follows Lincoln through his dealings with his family,especially his brother who was not very industrious, the devotion to his mother, and father. He was a true friend and a worthy opponent to his adversaries. Abraham explains his actions and gives logical supportive evidence to explain his views. He spends time in his State Government as well as a one year term in the lower house of Congress. He was a great orator sometimes speaking for four or five hours at a time. He takes the reader through one of the most trying period in the history of the United States.He served among some of the great persons of the United States, for example Henry Clay. His views on slavery started very early and he spoke about the Missouri Compromise and the injustice that it did to the United States. His main objective was to prevent the new Western States from bringing slaves into their States. The opponents were set to bring slaves into the new States. Missouri, Nebaska, Kansas and Western States in his mind and his party mind wanted the slave question resolved.The periods when he was not in the government was taken up with defending legal cases. Now he is on the eve of running for the office of President of the United States, and the main question is how to save the Union. The Whigs will not desert the Union nor will they let the Slave States destroy it or withdraw.SPR
